Database Management and Architecture

Using MySQL and PostgreSQL are easy enough, but still can elude the savviest of developer. The power of a well-architected database can ensure that transaction processing and analysis can be performed reliably as the website grows in users. VANMETCO is primarily a database company with over 18 years of experience with many platforms like Oracle, Microsoft SQL Server, Sybase, Informix, and IBM DB2, as well as open source databases like SQLite, MySQL, and PostgreSQL with high levels of transactional activity.

Choosing the right database

The best choices for LAMP architecture are to support high user concurrency with reliable fast transaction processing. Most importantly they must be free; otherwise the startup costs will become unwieldy for even the largest business. Also processing an online order, or providing customer information does not have to contain everything your business tracks in the back office. Hence to save licensing costs from you accounting and inventory application see: Integration

MySQL

A powerful entry level database with enough of the important features to get most businesses off the ground using online web applications. MySQL is an easy to administer platform that can be understood by most any technical non-DBA. While MySQL database can grow to significant sizes they tend to have more trouble with high user volume, but for most businesses, this is a nice problem to have just not with your database.

PostgreSQL

An industrial strength database platform equal to or greater performance than most commercial vendor platforms like Microsoft, Oracle and IBM. Using a technology called MVCC (Multi Version Concurrency) allows PostgreSQL to handle greater volumes of users supporting consistent transactions. Really the choice is administrative overhead requiring a strong technical DBA to manage, but is reliable enough that most tasks can be automated with support only needed monthly.
